Description
Join the panel of Guardian journalists as they discuss Afghanistan’s future and analyse the latest developments in this fast-moving story.

With shocking speed, a resurgent Taliban have taken control of large parts of Afghanistan and are expected to proclaim a new Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in the coming days. The US decision to withdraw troops has led to this crisis, but despite domestic criticism that this is Biden’s Saigon, the President maintains that “Afghan leaders have to .. fight for themselves. Fight for their nation.”

Afghanistan’s new leaders claim to want “an open, inclusive Islamic government”, but many Afghans fear a return to the cruel and repressive practices of the past. As citizens prepare for life under strict Islamic rule, there are already reports of targeted killings of former government workers and women being prevented from attending schools and universities. What does the future hold for ordinary Afghans? What are the responsibilities of the international community, and can it still act to avert catastrophe?

The panel, chaired by Today in Focus presenter Michael Safi and including Guardian international correspondents Emma Graham-Harrison and Peter Beaumont, world affairs editor Julian Borger, and Zahra Nader, former reporter for the New York Times in Afghanistan, will discuss the future of the country and answer some of your questions at this live-streamed event.

All profits from this event will be donated to relevant charities.
