Description

Background:

Under the coronavirus pandemic, national staff have played an even more vital role in the sustainability of the missions of humanitarian organisations. This experience has highlighted an issue the community has suffered from for years, and that is the inequality in who we train. At PMO Excellence, they understand the challenges surrounding access to trainings.

Therefore, PMO Security Risk Management are now offering a 2-day, contextualised security awareness training on location to increase the accessibility of trainings to all levels of staff. They believe strongly in the need to make trainings more equally accessible while maintaining a high-quality standard. Therefore, they only work with certified trainers with current and relevant field experience. They use this experience to create, for your staff, recognisable and contextualised scenarios in their trainings.

National staff is often lacking in training, yet they are most likely to be exposed to immediate danger. International staff depends highly upon national staff for their own safety. Therefore, this training was created to make safety and security trainings more accessible to all humanitarian staff. PMO SRM do this by having these training in country.

You are ultimately responsible for your own safety. Being aware that you are in an unsafe environment is the first step in decreasing your risk. That is, in a nutshell, what this training course is about. The workshop builds upon this self-awareness to further insight for the need and development of good policy, procedures and contingency plans.

To do this PMO SRM build practical and theoretical modules that are context-specific. That means they discuss risks and threats relevant to the location where are participants are based. Since this training is done on location, this helps to better focus in on those factors the participants need to be most aware of, meaning the theory is mixed with interesting exercises and videos based on local events.

Course Modules:

  • Context- and cultural awareness
  • Residence Safety: Burglary, Fire, Armed attack,
  • Driving & Transport safety: driving in hazardous environments, checkpoints, ambush, …
  • IHL & humanitarian principles
  • Traveling alone & Personal planning for an Emergency
  •  Abduction & Coping with capture
  • Communication
  • Explosive hazards: explosive remnants of war (UXO), land mines, Improvised explosive devices (IED).
  • Conflict and terrorism
  • Sexual harassment and sexual assault
  • Civil unrest

After the course, participants will have:

  • Significantly improved safety and security awareness

  • Increased awareness of dealing with armed actors
