Covering the latest theories and methods in security thinking/ terminology and addresses the evolving security environment & emerging risks

This five-day intensive course will enable participants to identify the key requirements for managing security in complex emergencies and conflict zones by practicing essential techniques in risk management, security assessment and crisis response. The course draws on field case studies, the current humanitarian environment and the security management practices used by humanitarian bodies internationally.

Course objectives

By the end of the training participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of key security management skills (including risk management, situational analysis, assessment, plan implementation, monitoring and evaluation, continuity and crisis planning and leadership).
  • Practice these skills in relation to setting and achieving programme goals when managing humanitarian emergencies.
  • Demonstrate that you can work effectively in reviewing and enhancing security management practice and procedures to support programmes and staff in the field.
  • Reflect and evaluate on personal performance and the performance of others in relation to security in emergencies and improving practice.
  • Communicate effectively to different audiences in the field of humanitarian practice using appropriate media.

Additionally, we will be assisting participants to practice many critical soft skills for example, communication and coordination, research and analytical skills, teamwork and management skills, composure and decision making under duress.

Venue

The venue for the this in person training will be confirmed closer to the time of the course, however it is likely to be based in the Greater London region.

Course Structure:

Registration is from 8.45 am in the first day. Training each day will run from 9 am and conclude at approximately 5:30 pm.

From the second day, each training day begins with a review of the topics covered the previous day to ensure that the concepts, tools, and frameworks are fully understood. Each day ends with a period of reflection, evaluation, and questions.

Participants will be actively encouraged to participate in classroom discussions and group work. The trainer will draw on both theoretical and practical knowledge in order to make the experience and learning applicable to the realities of the humanitarian sector.

The sessions will be held from – Monday 19th June to Friday 23rd June.

Who should attend

We recommend this course for anybody with significant security responsibilities in their job description. This would certainly include, Security Focal Points, Country Directors, Field Coordinators, Logistic Managers in the field or persons based in headquarters overseeing country programmes. Even experienced security practitioners will benefit from new theory and from the more intense practical exercises such as the simulation and panel exercise.

The Credit-Rated Assessment:

This course has an optional credit-rated assessment component. Those who are interested in this option must pay the additional credit-rated fee at any point prior to the course start date, or on the first day of the course, so that the trainers can assess you. Payment can be made by card or invoice. You will have three months after the course to complete the assignment.
