The GISF Deputy Director (NA), supports the GISF Executive Director and leads GISF activities in North America to achieve GISF’s strategic goals. This is a new position and aims to raise the profile of GISF in North America as a sector thought leader on humanitarian security risk management as well as ensuring that the membership remains the core focus of GISF and GISF remains relevant to their needs. The position is also responsible for identifying possible funding opportunities, Business Partners and GISF Affiliates.

Secretariat Management:

  • Responsible for operational management of the US branch of the GISF Secretariat, including managing US project personnel and project systems, including overseeing budget(s) and spending of GISF North America and producing financial reports
  • Accountable to GISF Executive Director to ensure GISF NA Secretariat meets the needs and expectations of the members within budget and making best use of available resources and ensure North American Perspectives are incorporated into GISF (EX. Research projects, Forum Sessions, workshops, virtual events, strategic planning etc..) including facilitation of the North American Steering Group Sub-Committee

Donor Relations:

  • Develop proposals for institutional donors and produce regular donor reports for North American specific institutional and private donors
  • Identify, develop and maintain relationships with private companies for the Business Partnership Program.

Capacity building and sharing of information:

  • Actively maintain communication between GISF members to enhance collaboration and knowledge transfer and ensure North American NGOs are active in the global debates and Identify topics and facilitators for forums, workshops, projects etc, to raise awareness and build capacity for security risk management
  • Act as a support base for GISF member organisations and the GISF North America external network, for policy and operational issues, working with the GISF Europe team to facilitate networking during rapid onset humanitarian crises and in response to day to day security risk management issues.
  • Contribute to the development of best practice in humanitarian security-risk management through active stakeholder engagement and capacity building, inputting to the GISF guides and tools for use by practitioners and acting as a resource for external events and stakeholders and
  • Represent GISF at relevant international meetings and conferences. Interact with senior officials from various organisations.


  • Experience of security risk management in humanitarian / development response at field and headquarters level, and/or experience of program management at country level in insecure environments.
  • Proven experience of project management and finance management.
  • Proven negotiation, liaison and networking skills at a senior level
  • Demonstrable knowledge of all aspects of and approaches to security risk management by humanitarian, development and human rights actors, including critical incident management.
  • Experience in working with colleagues and contacts who are based off-site and managing a small team.
  • Capacity to prioritise, focus and manage competing expectations within a large stakeholder group.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written in English.
  • Prior experience with humanitarian security coordination mechanisms.
  • Excellent written and spoken English, and proficiency in a second language (French, Spanish, or Arabic preferred).
  • Travel required.


  • Experience of proposal development, with a knowledge of securing new funding streams and an understanding of donor compliance.
  • Understanding of humanitarian accountability processes.
  • Experience public speaking and presenting to a wide range of audiences, including at a senior level.
  • Understanding of IT systems for operational performance
  • Proficiency in a second language (Spanish, or Arabic preferred).


Master’s degree in Humanitarian Studies or related discipline or equivalent relevant work experience.
