About Us

The Global Interagency Security Forum (GISF) is a global, member-led network of over 130 NGOs dedicated to improving security risk management (SRM) in the humanitarian, development, and human rights sectors.

Founded in 2006 as the European Interagency Security Forum (EISF), GISF began as a peer-led space for security professionals to share knowledge and build trust. Today, GISF is an independent network supporting organisations to strengthen their internal SRM capacity, engage in collective solutions, and influence the systems that affect aid worker safety.

Our work is grounded in the belief that security is not a barrier to access, but a critical enabler of safe, sustainable, and principled operations. GISF brings NGOs together to improve how security is managed across the sector, helping organisations reach the communities they serve, even in the most challenging contexts.

What is security risk management?

Security risk management (SRM) is the process through which NGOs identify, assess, and manage security risks that affect an organisation’s staff, assets, and programmes. Robust SRM enables organisations to operate safely and sustainably in insecure environments by balancing risk, access, and duty of care. Effective SRM is not just a technical function, but a strategic enabler of humanitarian, development, and human rights work in an evolving landscape.
