Founded in 2012, The Syria Justice and Accountability Centre (SJAC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting meaningful justice for Syria that holds perpetrators accountable and addresses the grievances of victims, leading to lasting peace and respect for human rights.

Position Summary

SJAC seeks to update its physical security policy for its team members working in and traveling to Syria. Under the supervision of the SJAC Legal Director, the Physical Security Trainer will conduct a review of SJAC’s existing policies, its most recent staff survey outlining security concerns and conduct any follow-up interviews as required. On the basis of this research and information, the consultant will update SJAC’s Security Policy and conduct a training for team leads on the implementation of the policy. The policy should include considerations for daily work activities, travel within and to Syria, as well as a crisis management strategy. Both individuals and companies are encouraged to apply.

General duties and responsibilities

  • Conduct a desk-review of SJAC’s existing Security Policies and staff survey of security concerns
  • Draft follow-up questions for targeted interviews to gather further insight into SJAC’s work methodologies and security requirements, particularly with Team Leads
  • Update SJAC’s Security Policy, taking into particular account changing dynamics within Syria. New policy should include a crisis management strategy and SOPs
  • Conduct one 3-4 hour training for SJAC Team Leads on newly developed Security Policy and required next steps for implementation

skills and experience

  • Relevant postgraduate university degree or equivalent with relevant work experience
  • Strong communication skills
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in NGO safety and training
  • Professional fluency in written and spoken English; Arabic language a plus
  • Experience working directly with victims of human rights violations, or non-profits working in the MENA region
  • Knowledge, experience and understanding of working in the Syria/Middle Eastern context is essential
  • Applies a gender-sensitive approach
