Capacity strengthening
GISF supports NGOs to strengthen their internal security risk management (SRM) capabilities through a combination of technical tools, peer learning, and targeted support.
Our approach recognises that SRM is a shared responsibility across organisations and must be integrated across functions—from security teams to HR, legal, and senior leadership. We provide resources that enable both active and self-led development, helping NGOs of all sizes assess and improve their ability to manage risk effectively. Recognising the specific challenges faced by local and national NGOs, we also deliver tailored support to strengthen their role in managing security risks.
By investing in SRM capacity across the sector, GISF enables NGOs to operate more safely and sustainably in insecure environments.
Key activities
We support both in-person and virtual learning opportunities—from workshops and tailored sessions to train-the-trainer programmes. These activities build technical skills and promote knowledge exchange among staff across departments, including security, HR, legal, and senior leadership.
GISF’s upcoming SRM Self-Assessment Tool will help NGOs benchmark their internal SRM capacity and identify areas for improvement. The tool generates tailored insights to support strategic investment in security systems and processes.
GISF produces practical, accessible guides and toolkits to support organisations in strengthening their SRM systems. GISF’s NGO Toolboxes, available in English and French, offer practical guidance on topics such as risk assessment, crisis management, incident reporting, and staff wellbeing.
GISF supports NGO coordination mechanisms to strengthen their ability to promote operational safety and continuity, both in rapid-onset crises and over the long term. We provide training and tools for security focal points, facilitate communities of practice, and explore context-specific models that reflect the diverse ways NGOs manage security. Our work aims to ensure all NGO platforms possess a minimum capacity for SRM coordination and can access practical resources to support inclusive, effective approaches.
GISF is expanding its direct support to national and local NGOs, with resources, training, and technical advice designed around their specific needs, structures, and approaches to managing risk. This includes capacity exchange opportunities with INGOs and regional support networks.
